First Tesla Model Y Road Trip in India - Mumbai to Hyderabad

Tesla Model Y deliveries in India have begun! Dr. Praveen Koduru took delivery of his Model Y and did a drive back to his home in Hyderabad from Mumbai!

Mumbai to Hyderabad in Tesla Model Y RWD LFP. It has approximately 64.5kWh battery pack. About 61 something should be usable till 0% & then bit after that too.


Overall Trip Summary -

Distance Covered - 773.9km

Consumption - 112.4kWh

Overall Efficiency - 145.2Wh/km (6.9km/kWh)

Charging Stops - 3 (Only 2 needed though)

Now let's see breakdown of trip


First Leg : Mumbai to Pune

Since elevation is up, consumption was bit high.

176.5km with 151.4Wh/km (6.6km/kWh) efficiency consuming 26.7kWh

Start SoC - 82%

End SoC - 38%

Second Leg : Pune to Hotel Nisarg Solapur

This is divided into two parts.

Part 1 - A night stop at Hotel Swagat.

Efficiency for this trip was 127.3Wh/km (7.86km/kWh)

Part 2 : Further today morning to hotel nisarg Hyundai CZ. Which first had some communication/power issue. But was resolved later - 74kW peak DCFC on 200A 150kW charger.


High traffic, construction worsened the efficiency.

Driven 90 - 120km/h wherever traffic allowed.

276.5km in this total leg.

Total till now from start - 453km at 153.5Wh/km

Arrival SoC - 32%

Charging Stopped at - 98%

No extra time apart from for lunch at hotel.

Third Leg : Next Destination - Hotel 24

Tesla Expected Arrival - 46%

Arrival SoC in real - 59.5% !!

Distance - 178.3km at 129.5Wh/km (7.72km/kWh)

Driven between 90-100km/h for where traffic conditions allowed

Plugged in at CZ charger at hotel. This charging session was not required to reach Hyderabad, but they had to stop for tea break, so opportunity Charging or ABC (Always be Charging ) Charging Stopped at - 90%

Final : To Home in Hyderabad

Driven over 110km/h for most part

Arrival - 46% with some local driving also at end.

Distance Covered in this part - 142.5km

Efficiency - 137.8Wh/km (7.26km/kWh)

No issues in mud, potholes and everything else. Tesla handled it all! Good driving experience as per doc with even back seats being comfortable. All charging done during lunch/dinner/tea break.


LFP Model Y is a champ.

Steering felt better in light mode for highway drive.

Camera based rain sensor, ah well...

Hazard avoidance alarm need some work for Indian conditions.

Overall good experience. Software related things for AP stuff Tesla will improve with testing.


Some Further observations from Dr. -

The road trip was awesome. Our experience:

1. We have sufficient chargers on this route, be need for range anxiety. Though there is a need for more super fast chargers

2. We literally tested model Y in all conditions in these two days. Heavy rain, sunny afternoon, smooth roads, pot hole ridden roads, bad traffic, performance at various speeds etc

3. Driving experience and back seat ride quality is amazing. It’s on par with all the luxury brands out there

4. pickup is terrific. Makes driving a breeze when you have a group of slow moving heavy vehicles with lane discipline

5. We hit close to 140kmph on few tracks. Vehicle stability was superb

6.The cameras reading the road traffic and displaying on the screen as animation felt futuristic. Can’t wait for FSD to get approval in India

7. No need to brakes most of the times. Remove your foot off accelerator, the car slows down immediately.


If driven at 80-90km/h, it seems to be able to do 500km range, 100-110km/h will be about 460km ish. and even high speeds will have you at 400-440km range. Which is incredibly good.
